Founded in 1954 in Orange County, the Southwestern Herpetologists Society has met continuously in a variety of locations over the years. The parent organization is now centered in the San Fernando Valley of Los Angeles County. The Al Robbins Chapter was brought into the Society in January 1999 to further serve members in central California. Membership in SWHS is open to anyone interested in the study and conservation of reptiles and amphibians.

The objectives of the Southwestern Herpetologists Society are:

  • To enhance the education of the members and the general public concerning the roles of amphibians and
    reptiles in the natural world.
  • To promote the conservation of reptiles and amphibians in particular, as well as all wildlife in general.
  • To provide information for the closer cooperation between amateur and professional herpetologists, that
they may work together for the promotion of the science of herpetology.
